World Health Organization Sounds Concern Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 people that would benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural guidance on the medications.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Per forecasts, over two billion will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The new guidelines recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and continuous treatment," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are significant barriers to broad availability to the jabs that can help people shift substantial weight, notes the body.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Even in the current most favorable case, the supply of these medications would only suffice for around 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline encourages countries and companies to increase availability, by measures such as voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in multiple countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

The injections mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance the sense of being full so people reduce food intake.

Patients typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies indicates users may regain a significant portion within a year of stopping the medication, because their usual appetite come back.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your likelihood for contracting diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Obesity affects individuals in all nations and was linked to millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
