New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
