Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
