Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
