Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
