The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
