Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
